"The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is one of the most extraordinary places I have visited in Rome. It is often put on the back side to other more famous basilicas, but in reality it is the Pope’s Cathedral and the oldest and most important church in Western Christianity. From the first glance you can feel its grandeur, while entering you are left speechless in front of the magnificence of the interiors. The naves are immense and richly decorated, with the monumental statues of the Apostles that seem to accompany the visitor along the way. The golden ceilings, Cosmetesque floors, frescoes and works of art tell centuries of history, making each environment an authentic museum in the open. The atmosphere is solemn but at the same time welcoming, ideal both for those who want to pray and for those who love art and architecture. Also worth a visit is the beautiful medieval cloister, an oasis of peace in the heart of the city, where you can admire finely decorated columns and breathe an atmosphere of great tranquility. A few steps away is also the Scala Santa, one of the most significant places of pilgrimage, which adds a further spiritual value to the experience. The basilica is well maintained, easily accessible and organized to allow a pleasant visit. I recommend dedicating at least two or three hours to calmly explore every corner, stopping to admire the artistic details and learn about the history of this unique place.
