Gothic Quarter

The Barri Gòtic occupies the site of the original Roman settlement of Barcino, and though much of its 'medieval' fabric was in fact restored or reconstructed in the early 20th century, the district still delivers Barcelona's most atmospheric tangle of shadowy lanes, hidden squares, and Gothic facades. Barcelona Cathedral, with its cloister of resident geese, and the Roman walls visible near Plaça Nova anchor its historic weight, while Plaça Reial and Plaça del Pi provide lively, cafe-lined open spaces to break up the maze. Picasso spent formative years nearby, and the area's proximity to La Rambla and El Born makes it a natural hub for wandering between Barcelona's old-town districts. It's easy to lose your sense of direction here, which is part of the experience.
