Landmark
Built in 1640 during the Reapers' War and expanded over the following centuries, Montjuïc Castle spent much of its life as a military stronghold and, later, a notorious prison and execution site, most infamously for Catalan president Lluís Companys in 1940, a history the on-site exhibitions address directly. Its ramparts now open onto some of the best panoramic views in Barcelona, taking in the port, the city grid, and the Mediterranean beyond, which is what draws most of the 60,000-plus reviewers. At two hours, it's a proper half-outing best combined with the cable car ride up or a walk through the surrounding Montjuïc gardens. Recommended booking helps at peak times, though the site is large enough to absorb crowds.

"To me it's a major attraction in Barcelona and we absolutely loved it. Back in 1640 it was a military fortress. Great for walking and exploring, nice view of the city and the sea. There is small bar in there for drinks and some food. The top of the castle can be quite windy, so be mindful of what you wear."
