Hatchards

4.8 (2,465)Free

Founded in 1797 and holding royal warrants ever since, Hatchards is London's oldest surviving bookshop, its Piccadilly premises retaining a wood-paneled, old-world character across several packed floors reached by a spiral staircase. Its very high culture score and rating point to a shop valued for genuine literary heritage rather than passing trends, with reviewers praising both the building's atmosphere and its strong selection of first editions and antiquarian titles. It rewards unhurried browsing more than a quick errand, particularly for collectors interested in rare editions. Its Piccadilly location makes it an easy addition to a walk that also takes in Fortnum & Mason nearby.

What people say

"This is one of the most impressive bookshops I have visited. The building has a unique style and atmosphere, making it a pleasure to explore even if you are not planning to buy a book. Spread across five floors, the shop offers an enormous selection of books, all organised into clear sections. Finding what you are looking for is easy, and browsing different categories is enjoyable thanks to the layout. I especially appreciated the philosophy and economics sections, both of which are extensive and filled with interesting titles, from beginner friendly books to more advanced works by wellknown authors. There is also a dedicated children's section and one dedicated to gift, the prices are fair. You can find signed copies and books with stunning covers. The staff are numerous, friendly, and always available to help or answer questions. Understairs it was a little bit too cold. The health section was great too, with different authors and topics."
