Tränenpalast

4.6 (7,289)Free

Nicknamed the 'Palace of Tears' for the emotional partings it once witnessed, the Tränenpalast preserves the former GDR border checkpoint at Friedrichstraße station, where East Germans said goodbye to visiting friends and family who could return West while they could not. Free admission, a perfect culture score, and a 4.6-star rating reflect a small but powerful museum, with original passport control cubicles preserved on-site giving the exhibition a visceral, specific sense of place. Reviewers consistently describe the experience as profound and deeply somber rather than merely informative. At 45 minutes, it's a compact but emotionally weighty addition to a Cold War-focused day in Mitte.

What people say

"Very well laid out and presented museum. You get a real feeling for what it must have been like. There are some of the old passport / security cubicles you can go through. Quite a disturbing experience. Good description (with modules of the building) of how the east and west passengers were kept separate in the main station. Staff were pleasant and descriptions were in German and English (appreciated!)."
